A recent LendingTree survey ranked Richmond tied for 6th among U.S. metro areas with the highest percentage of Black-owned businesses, underscoring the city’s strong entrepreneurial ecosystem. Nationally, Black-owned businesses are experiencing remarkable momentum, growing by 22.2% year over year, underscoring the expanding impact of Black entrepreneurs across industries.
Supporting Black-owned businesses in Richmond is also easier than ever thanks to BLK RVA, launched in 2019 by Richmond Region Tourism in collaboration with more than 20 community leaders. BLK RVA promotes Black-owned businesses across shopping, dining, and experiences while celebrating Richmond’s vibrant Black culture.
A Legacy Rooted in Richmond History
Richmond’s Black entrepreneurial history dates back to the Reconstruction era, when African Americans established businesses and institutions despite systemic barriers. That legacy is deeply connected to Jackson Ward, often called the “Harlem of the South.” Once a thriving center of Black commerce, Jackson Ward was home to Black-owned banks, insurance companies, newspapers, and institutions that fueled economic empowerment and civil rights advocacy.
Influential leaders like Maggie L. Walker, the first female bank president of any race in the United States, and John Mitchell Jr., helped shape Richmond’s Black business landscape. Their impact continues to inspire today’s entrepreneurs across the city.
