6 Local Ways to Honor Día de los Muertos in Richmond

A Dia de los Muertos ofrenda or altar with candles, marigolds, sugar skulls, and favorite foods.

Dancing Catrinas, sugar skulls, and ofrendas glowing with marigolds and candlelight. Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is upon us, and Richmond’s growing community has plenty of ways to honor those we have lost.

Celebrated Nov. 1 and 2, with smaller celebrations in the days before, the Day of the Dead is a Mexican tradition that honors loved ones who have passed by setting a place for them. Families build ofrendas (altars) with their favorite dishes, cherished photos, and a trail of marigolds to guide their spirits home for a visit. It’s not a sad holiday. It’s a celebration of life.

Richmond’s Latino community keeps that tradition alive every year, and local businesses across the city are setting the candles and laying out the marigolds for all to celebrate.

Where to Celebrate:

Latino Farmers Market

Saturday, Oct. 31 | 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Stop by the community altar to honor someone you love, then grab one last haul from your favorite vendors before the season wraps.
