Richmond’s local coffee shop scene has thrived in recent years, brewing up perfect respites for the work-from-home crowd, cozy spots to catch up with friends or colleagues, and places to savor a truly remarkable cup o’ joe.

Sefton Coffee Company: A downtown go-to for a reliable morning cup before work, a meeting, or a stroll through the city.
Birdie’s: Come for the coffee and pastries, stay for the cocktails. Birdie’s is a cheerful Broad Street stop that’s perfect for fueling up before a First Fridays gallery crawl.
Buna Kurs: A traditional Ethiopian cafe that gives you a taste of coffee’s birthplace right here in Richmond. Slow down, sip, and savor.
Paix Coffee: Richmond’s newest bragging right. Tucked away on Cleveland Street in the Museum District, Paix started as a pop-up espresso cart run by longtime friends and coffee pros Seth McDaniel and Danny Hodge before opening its cozy cafe and roastery. This year, Paix took home two medals at the 2026 U.S. & Canada Global Coffee Awards: gold in the single-origin espresso category for its Ethiopian “Sweet Kept Secret” and silver in the natural filter category for its Colombian “Concord Intense.” Grab a vanilla latte made with house-made syrup, browse the vintage shop next door, and bring home a bag of award-winning beans.
Rostov’s Coffee & Tea: A longtime Fan favorite since 1979 for freshly roasted beans and loose-leaf tea. If you’re stocking your home coffee bar, start here and make sure you grab a cup to go.
Lamplighter Coffee Roasters: An RVA roasting institution with a loyal following. It’s hard to talk Richmond coffee without mentioning Lamplighter.
Abi’s Books & Brews: Books, coffee, and community, the perfect combo. This bookstore cafe near VCU pours espresso drinks alongside shelves of gently used reads (including a Banned Book Nook) and hosts trivia, open mics, and knitting clubs.
Afterglow Coffee Cooperative: A worker-owned roastery cafe in the heart of Richmond’s brewery district, and one of the top-rated coffee shops in the city.
Grit Coffee: Whether you’re fueling up before a Scott’s Addition brewery crawl or grabbing a latte on your way down Libbie Avenue, Grit is an easy pick for a quality cup and a comfortable seat. With multiple spots around the region, there’s usually one close by.
Parousia Coffee: This Scott’s Addition roaster serves on-site roasted coffee with house-made syrups like lavender vanilla and white chocolate mocha. Catch their coffee trailer at the RVA Big Market at Bryan Park on Saturday mornings, too.
Roastology: Newly relocated to Scott’s Addition from Carytown, Roastology remains a local favorite for freshly roasted brews no matter which part of town they are in.
Riverbend Roastery: A women-owned Church Hill staple. Grab your cup to go and walk over to Libby Hill Park for one of the best views in the city.
Peaberry Coffeehouse: Church Hill’s newest coffee crush comes from the owner of Riverbend and Liberty Public House. Peaberry opened this spring on North 32nd Street with a bright blue exterior, a mustard yellow sofa, velvet seats by floor-to-ceiling windows, and creative lattes like a banana bread latte and a cookie butter shaken espresso.
Reviresco Coffee: A Malvern Gardens favorite known for some of the friendliest owners and staff in town. You’ll feel like a regular on your first visit.
Perk Coffee & Lunchbox: Coffee in the morning, lunch by midday. Perk is a Bon Air favorite for good reason.
Crossroads Coffee & Ice Cream: Steps from Forest Hill Park, this is the move for a morning sip and a walk. Snag a patio seat for prime people-watching.
