Supporting Hispanic-Owned Businesses Beyond Hispanic Heritage Month
As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, it’s important to take a moment to recognize the lasting impact of Hispanic-owned businesses in Richmond and the importance of supporting them year-round. These businesses are essential not only for the unique cultural contributions they bring but also for their role in driving our local economy. Supporting them helps foster an inclusive, vibrant Richmond that celebrates diversity every day—not just for one month of the year.
We recently spoke with Michel Zajur, President and CEO of the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (VAHCC), who shared his thoughts on the challenges Hispanic entrepreneurs face, the initiatives that support them, and how we can all help uplift this vital segment of the community.
The Power of Hispanic Entrepreneurship
Hispanic-owned businesses play a crucial role in strengthening our economy, providing jobs for nearly 3 million people, according to the Small Business Administration.
“The Hispanic community has a true entrepreneurial spirit,” Zajur explained. “They’re starting businesses at three times the rate of mainstream businesses, bringing fresh energy and resilience to the local economy.”
These entrepreneurs don’t just create jobs—they help bridge cultural divides, offering the Richmond community a chance to experience the richness of Hispanic culture through their products and services.

One example Zajur shared was of La Sabrosita Bakery in Midlothian that, with a microloan from the VAHCC for an oven, grew from a small operation to a thriving business with products now sold in over 200 stores across Virginia and North Carolina. Success stories like this illustrate the resilience, innovation, and determination that characterize Hispanic entrepreneurship in Richmond.
Moving Beyond Hispanic Heritage Month
Supporting Hispanic-owned businesses shouldn’t end with Hispanic Heritage Month. Here are some meaningful ways to show your support throughout the year:
- Seek Out Local & Diverse: One of the simplest ways to support Hispanic-owned businesses is to seek them out intentionally. Richmond is home to a vibrant range of Hispanic-owned restaurants, boutiques, and service providers. Zajur encourages everyone to explore these local businesses regularly, discovering the unique flavors, quality goods, and exceptional services they offer. To make this easier, the VAHCC is working on a searchable business directory for 2025, which will allow consumers to identify Hispanic-owned businesses easily.
- Participate in Community Events: Events organized by the VAHCC, like Restaurante Week (October 7-13), invite Richmonders to enjoy Hispanic cuisine across the city. Later this season, on November 2, the VAHCC will host Noche de Fiesta at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden—a celebration that will honor Dia de los Muertos as well as the outstanding work of the Virginia Hispanic Foundation. And, for a truly immersive cultural experience, don’t miss the VAHCC’s largest event of the year, the Que Pasa Festival, a free family-friendly event timed around Cinco de Mayo weekend which transforms Brown’s Island into a lively celebration of Latin American culture with food, music, and art.
Breaking Barriers and Building Bridges
Beyond the typical business challenges, Hispanic entrepreneurs often encounter language and cultural barriers. Zajur explained that many Hispanic business owners lack access to mentors and resources, which can make it harder to navigate regulations and connect with other local businesses. VAHCC is addressing these gaps with programs like legal clinics, a job board, and educational initiatives that guide business owners through everything from setting up LLCs to marketing strategies.
As Zajur shared, “Our Chamber serves as a bridge, helping Hispanic entrepreneurs connect with mainstream businesses and resources.” By supporting the Chamber’s efforts, we help create a thriving local economy that benefits everyone.
Embracing Year-Round Support
While Hispanic Heritage Month brings valuable attention to Hispanic-owned businesses, Zajur urges the Richmond community to continue this support beyond October. “This is a vibrant, rich community, providing economic vitality and diversity to our area,” he said.
By making a conscious effort to support Hispanic-owned businesses throughout the year, we contribute to a stronger and more inclusive Richmond, where cultural richness and economic growth go hand in hand.
Whether it’s enjoying a meal at a local Hispanic-owned restaurant, attending a VAHCC event, or simply recommending a favorite Hispanic business to a friend, your support makes a difference.
