Shop, Share and Support: Your Guide to Supporting Local RVA Businesses
May is National Small Business Month, and here in Richmond, we’re lucky to have an incredible community of locally owned businesses that shape the heart and soul of our city. From cozy coffee shops and neighborhood boutiques to service providers and creative studios, small businesses are more than just places to shop or dine, they are the backbone of our local economy and culture.
When you shop local, your money goes much further. According to American Express’ 2022 Small Business Economic Impact Study, for every $1 spent with a local business, over two-thirds, or $0.68, stays in the local community to support local families, local causes, and other local businesses. It’s called the multiplier effect.
By contrast, when you spend $1 with a national retailer, only about 30% to 40% stays local, or just $0.30 to $0.40. Supporting local doesn’t just mean keeping a favorite business open, it means keeping more money circulating right here in RVA, creating jobs, funding public services, and strengthening the entire community.
Local businesses also bring a unique character to our neighborhoods. They make Richmond Richmond, the distinctive patchwork community we love to live in, and others love to visit. They sponsor Little League teams, donate to local causes, and are often the first to step up when the community needs help. When you support a local business, you’re not just making a purchase, you’re investing in a stronger, more vibrant RVA.
At Find Local RVA, we’re passionate about helping you connect with the incredible businesses that make Richmond unique. We are powered by InUnison, Richmond’s only membership organization dedicated exclusively to local, independent businesses, which gives us deep insight into RVA’s small business community. This National Small Business Month, we’re challenging everyone to choose local first. Here are a few easy ways to make a big impact:
1. Bring a Friend
Introducing someone new to a local business you love is one of the best ways to support it. Word of mouth is powerful; your recommendation helps businesses grow their customer base and keeps them thriving.
2. Attend Events
Markets, pop-ups, and workshops help small businesses connect with the community. Showing up matters! These events provide critical exposure and are a fun way to discover new favorites.
3. Engage with Local Businesses’ Posts and Leave a Positive Review
A like, comment, save, or share on social media helps boost visibility, while a glowing review can influence others to give the business a try. These simple actions have a big impact on reach and reputation.
4. Choose Local Services
Need a haircut? Starting a home project? Looking for wellness services? Before you book, take a moment to explore local providers. From hairstylists to contractors to pharmacies, local businesses offer trusted expertise.
5. Buy Gift Cards
Gift cards are a great way to provide immediate support, even if you don’t need something right now. Plus, they make thoughtful gifts for birthdays, holidays, or just because!
