A recent LendingTree survey ranks Richmond 7th among U.S. metro areas with the highest percentage of Black-owned businesses, a testament to the city’s entrepreneurial spirit and strong support networks. Nationally, Black-owned businesses are experiencing significant growth, increasing by 22.2% year over year, showcasing the strength and impact of Black entrepreneurs across industries.

Supporting Black entrepreneurs in Richmond has never been easier, thanks to initiatives like BLK RVA, launched in 2019 by Richmond Region Tourism. This collaboration with over 20 community leaders promotes Black-owned businesses while highlighting Richmond’s vibrant Black culture. Their website offers directories for shopping, dining, and experiences, making it easy to discover and support local Black-owned establishments.

Richmond’s history as a hub for Black entrepreneurship dates back to the Reconstruction era when African Americans, despite systemic barriers, established businesses and institutions that served their communities and laid the foundation for future generations.

At the heart of this legacy is Jackson Ward, often called the “Harlem of the South,” a thriving center of African American culture and commerce. This historic neighborhood was once home to a flourishing economy of Black-owned banks, insurance companies, and other enterprises that provided essential services while also playing a pivotal role in civil rights advocacy and economic empowerment.

Pioneering entrepreneurs like Maggie L. Walker, the first female bank president of any race in the United States, and John Mitchell Jr., a civil rights activist and newspaper editor, helped shape Richmond’s Black business landscape. Their legacy continues to inspire today’s Black entrepreneurs who are driving innovation and fostering community across the city.
